The Debrief: NFC playoff picture — Atlanta or Seattle at No. 6?

Posted on March 26, 2019March 26, 2019Categories NFLTags , , , , , , , , , , ,

The Zombie Seahawks are still standing. But they are diminished like the rest of the NFC’s power teams from 2016, struggling to get to this season’s finish line.

Seattle’s bizarre win in Dallas, where the Seahawks had more penalty yards (142) than actual yards (136), officially knocked out last year’s top seed. The No. 6 spot in the NFC comes down to the Seahawks and the reigning NFC champion Falcons, two teams that have stumbled while chasing expectations all season and could already be looking ahead to next year. The top five spots in the NFC, meanwhile, are all accounted for by teams that went .500 or worse in 2016.

Here’s how the NFC playoff picture looks after Christmas Eve, with a peek at what’s ahead for each team:

2017 SEASON: WEEK 16
▹ The Debrief: Everything at stake in Week 17
▹ Jimmy G. making 49ers football fun again
▹ Seahawks survive, ending Cowboys season1) Philadelphia Eagles Jerseys (12-2): A win on Christmas night would clinch the No. 1 seed for the Eagles and possibly tempt coach Doug Pederson to rest some starters in the Week 17 finale against Dallas. That’s a risky proposition with a new starting quarterback (Nick Foles Jerseys Jerseys Jerseys) who needs reps and an Eagles defense that wants to return to form after a few scratchy outings.

2) Minnesota Vikings Jerseys (12-3): Minnesota’s 16-0 victory over the Packers put the team one step closer to a first-round bye and a home Divisional Round game. A win over the Bears on Sunday clinches the bye, although the Vikings can also back into the bye if the Saints win or the Panthers lose or the Rams win. (So it’s happening.)

In an unpredictable league, the Vikings know exactly what team they are each week. The defense is so fundamentally sound, wearing opponents down and forcing them to complete mistake-free drives. It’s not like Aaron Rodgers Jerseys Jerseys’ presence should be required for Vikings fans to fully enjoy a dominant season sweep of the Packers, with “Skol” chants late on Christmas Eve Eve at frigid Lambeau Field. This Vikings squad can win its 13th game this week — that’d mark the second-most regular-season victories in the team’s 57-year franchise history. Vikings fans should savor a team with a chance to host a Super Bowl while they can because seasons like this don’t come around often.

3) Los Angeles Rams Jerseys (11-4): Sean McVay will be the youngest coach in NFL playoff history next month. A narrow victory in Tennessee clinched the Rams’ first NFC West title since the days of Marc Bulger and Mike Martz slinging the ball around St. Louis.

The Rams have little to play for this week. They will host a Wild Card Weekend game as the No. 3 or No. 4 seed, with no chance at a bye. That could mean McVay rests some starters against the 49ers, especially MVP candidate running back Todd Gurley Jerseys. This Rams squad, which finished 7-1 on the road, has the defense and special teams that can travel in the playoffs. I believe the Rams have the best overall team of any NFC squad, and it will be fascinating to see how their young players (and coach) handle this opportunity.

4) New Orleans Saints Jerseys (11-4): Sunday’s comprehensive takedown of the Falcons kept the Saints in control of the NFC South and clinched a playoff berth. A win over the Bucs on Sunday (or a loss by the Panthers) clinches the division for the Saints. New Orleans can’t earn a playoff bye.

The win over Atlanta was a reminder of how this playoff team is different than any Sean Payton has coached before. It’s complete. On a day when New Orleans’ running game was largely bottled up, Drew Brees Jerseys Jerseys hit a few key deep passes and the Saints’ defense throttled Atlanta’s running attack. This is Brees and Payton’s best chance at another Super Bowl run since 2011, a season that Saints fans weren’t sure this group Cheap NFL Jerseys online would ever get again.

5) Carolina Panthers Jerseys (11-4): Cam Newton Jerseys Jerseys’s game-winning touchdown after recovering his own fumble against Tampa was the Panthers’ season writ small — ugly, but ultimately effective. Style points aside, the Panthers have an 11-4 record with Newton leading the way.

Carolina’s late comeback against the Bucs clinched a playoff berth for the Panthers and sets up a compelling visit to Atlanta in Week 17. The Panthers could climb as high as the No. 2 seed with a win and (unlikely) losses by the Vikings, Saints and Rams. (Don’t ask why the Rams matter in this scenario, but they do.) The Panthers are more likely to be a wild-card team because a Saints win in Tampa clinches the NFC South for New Orleans. The Panthers’ recent formula of “just enough” has resulted in seven wins out of eight tries, but that will likely only get them a road game on Wild Card Weekend.

6) Atlanta Falcons Jerseys (9-6): How many times do I need to watch the Falcons not have it this season to realize they don’t have it? Atlanta’s desultory loss in New Orleans sets up a simple Week 17 scenario. Beat the Panthers at home and the Falcons are in as the NFC’s six seed. Lose the game and the Falcons still make the playoffs as the No. 6 seed — if the Seahawks stumble against the Cardinals.

While the Falcons will make the NFC playoff field spicier in theory, they continue to be a far more dangerous team on paper than in reality, routinely playing their biggest games in a mental fog.

7) Seattle Seahawks Jerseys (9-6): It’s a surprise they still have a chance. After the team’s 42-7 loss to the Rams, the Zombie Seahawks showed some championship fight in Dallas. Seattle needs to beat Arizona in Week 17 and watch the Falcons crumble at home to Carolina, two outcomes that sound too plausible to actually happen in this implausible, upside-down season.

Rams clinch NFC West title after win over Titans

Posted on March 18, 2019March 18, 2019Categories NFLTags , , , , , , ,

After a long wait, the Los Angeles Rams Jerseys (11-4) are finally heading back to the playoffs. The Rams clinched the NFC West title Sunday with a 27-23 victory over the Tennessee Titans Jerseys (8-7). Here’s what we learned:

1. The Rams’ long playoff drought, which stretches back to St. Louis, Marc Bulger and Mike Martz, is finally over. Los Angeles clinched the NFC West in wunderkind coach Sean McVay’s first season with a win over Tennessee in a game that required all 60 minutes. A Titans team even more desperate for a win didn’t go down easy, scratching and clawing to multiple slim leads before Cheap NFL Jerseys online a touchdown pass to Cooper Kupp Jerseys gave the Rams a lead they wouldn’t relinquish. For the Rams, it’s a sweet T-shirt-and-hat week, Victory Monday on Christmas and the cap to an incredible one-year turnaround. For the Titans, it’s another frustrating loss in a season that’s suddenly slipping away.

2. We can officially get on the Todd Gurley Jerseys for League MVP train. Find me at the front car. Gurley again powered the Rams’ offense, toting 22 times for 118 yards and catching an eye-popping 10 passes for 158 yards and two scores, including an 80-yard screen pass that served as a great example of how Gurley seems to only be getting better as the season progresses. Every Gurley carry and reception is must-see TV, whether it’s for the game-breaking potential or the possibility of another defender hurdled. A back like Gurley changes a franchise and serves as the difference in close games such as the one we saw Sunday.

3. The Titans are, again, a maddening tease. Tennessee shows plenty of capability to move the football and produce points when it’s between the 20s, but once inside them, struggles mightily. It happened once early, and set the tone for an offense that finished the day 1 for 4 in the red zone. When equipped with a mobile quarterback like Marcus Mariota Jerseys (22 of 39, 275 yards, one interception, 67.8 passer rating), that’s simply unacceptable. For a team hoping to squeeze its way into the playoffs despite recent struggles, that’s not encouraging, to put it lightly.

4. Bonus point for a couple of deserved nods: Jared Goff Jerseys was excellent after rebounding from a fumble, which came as a result of right guard Jamon Brown Jerseys Jerseys stepping the wrong way on a zone stretch play and leaving Goff to get flattened by Jurrell Casey Jerseys, who is a very large man. Goff posted a 22-of-38 passing line for 301 yards and four touchdowns, including a scoring connection to Kupp, who made a fantastic catch after a huge drop earlier in the second half.

Sam Ficken struggling in his Rams kicking debut

Posted on March 11, 2019March 11, 2019Categories NFLTags , ,

The Sam Ficken era is off to an inauspicious Cheap NFL Jerseys online start.

Ficken, signed by the Rams after NFL point leader Greg Zuerlein Jerseys was sent to injured reserve with a back injury this week, missed a field goal and an extra point attempt in the first half of Sunday’s matchup against the Titans in Nashville.

Rams coach Sean McVay wasn’t showing a ton of faith in Ficken even before he started missing kicks. On their first possession, the Rams opted to send punter Johnny Hekker Jerseys Jerseys on the field rather than attempt a 49-yard field goal. Los Angeles called a fake and Hekker heaved a deep pass on 4th-and-10 that fell incomplete.

Ficken’s first field field goal attempt struck the right upright from 36 yards out. He successfully converted a PAT after Todd Gurley Jerseys’s 80-yard touchdown reception in the second quarter. You can assume the Rams will be conservative in their kicking game for the rest of the afternoon.

Ficken was working at a Connecticut brokerage firm when the Rams rang about their suddenly vacant place kicker gig. Let’s hope the firm didn’t give away his desk. The 10-4 Rams can clinch the NFC West with a win.

Steelers believe Antonio Brown will be 100 percent

Posted on March 1, 2019March 1, 2019Categories NFLTags ,

After Antonio Brown Jerseys injured his calf, the working assumption had been that the Pittsburgh Steelers Jerseys needed to earn a bye to get their All-Pro receiver healthy for a playoff run.

NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported Sunday on GameDay Morning that the team is more optimistic about Brown’s calf strain.

“The Steelers expected him to be 100 percent by the time they take the field in the playoffs whether or not that is the first round or whether or not they get a bye,” Rapoport said. “This is an injury — it’s actually a calf strain despite being described as a partially torn calf muscle — really the same thing Mike Tomlin has called it — a calf bruise. This was described to me as a minor injury. One that actually has led Brown to tell people he could play in Week 17, if they needed him. They don’t; he won’t play. But that gives you an idea about how minor this is. They believe when he takes the field — whenever that is next — he’ll be back to himself.”

The Steelers face the Texans on Christmas afternoon and close out the season against the Browns. Ending the season with back-to-back wins to earn a bye would make the parsing of Brown’s timeline moot. But knowing the game’s best receiver will be full-go when Cheap NFL Jerseys online he does get back on the field is a sigh of relieve for the Steelers and their fans.

Panthers’ search for stability to start with extending Ron Rivera

Posted on February 20, 2019February 20, 2019Categories NFLTags

The Carolina Panthers Jerseys face months of uncertainty. Their owner Jerry Richardson has said he plans to sell the team. Their lease with the city is through 2019.

Meanwhile, they have an interim GM in Marty Hurney, and coach Ron Rivera is under contract through 2018. Those in charge in Carolina want that to change.

One of the Panthers’ most important tasks going forward is to extend Rivera’s contract, and sources say that’s exactly what they want to do. The team’s brass agrees that stability is needed on the football side. Put that together with the job the former coach of the year is doing and it’s an easy decision.

Talks are in their infancy, but they are expected to heat up soon.

Accordingly, the hope from many in the building is that Hurney stays on as GM, though an NFL official said the Panthers will have to go through the process and comply with the Rooney Rule before elevating him for good. Hurney will stay on — at least — through June. He has worked Cheap NFL Jerseys online well with Rivera.

Rivera’s last deal was a three-year, $19.5-million contract through 2018. If he was free or became available, he’d be coveted, including potentially by the Bears.

It has been a tumultuous few weeks for the Panthers, who gave way to the NFL to investigate alleged workplace misconduct involving Richardson. It led him to announce he was selling the team when the football season ends.

Names have already come to the forefront. Music mogul Sean “P. Diddy” Combs expressed interest in buying the team, though he likely will need partners. Sherman Financial Group CEO Ben Navarro and hedge fund manager Paul Tudor Jones are among those who have planned to attempt to purchase an available team. In Charlotte, Felix Sabates (Hornets minority owner) is considering leading a local group of investors.

The plan was always for Richardson to sell when he passed away. With a new regime coming earlier than expected, the sale will at least allow Richardson (rather than his estate) to have some say. Though he’d like to ask the new owner to stay in Carolina, leagues are loathe to allow previous owners to demand conditions of new owners. All of these issues will be hammered out over the next few months. They hope to handle all their issues, football-wise, by locking up Rivera.

Ravens take big step in playoff race by avoiding embarrassing slip-up to Colts

Posted on February 9, 2019February 9, 2019Categories NFLTags , , , , , , , , , ,

It won’t feel this way after an ugly 23-16 win over the Cheap NFL Jerseys online struggling Indianapolis Colts Jerseys, but there is reason for the Baltimore Ravens Jerseys to celebrate.

The Ravens (9-6) are now one victory away from clinching their first playoff berth since 2014. Baltimore has to beat the Cincinnati Bengals Jerseys in the regular-season finale to earn a wild-card spot.

Now, the Ravens certainly didn’t look like a playoff team against the downtrodden Colts (3-12). Playing as sloppy as the muddy field at M&T Bank Stadium, Baltimore made it too hard on itself with dropped interceptions on defense and unfinished drives on offense against one of the worst teams in the NFL.

A 13-point favorite, the Ravens weren’t able to give a sigh of relief until the final two minutes of the game. Nickel-back Maurice Canady broke up a fourth-down pass to T.Y. Hilton Jerseys Jerseys in the red zone with 1:38 remaining to seal the Ravens’ fifth win in their last six games.

Baltimore essentially won with marathon drives and Justin Tucker Jerseys Jerseys’s leg. The Ravens’ five drives of at least 10 plays are tied for the most by any team in a game this season and are the most by Baltimore since 2011. The problem was most resulted in field goals by Tucker, who converted from 30, 39 and 36 yards.

Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco Jerseys Jerseys finished 29-of-38 for 237 yards and two touchdowns in a game where he wasn’t sharp. Baltimore dominated time of possession, 35:48 to 24:12.

This was expected to be another pushover game like the ones against the Cleveland Browns Jerseys, Miami Dolphins Jerseys and Detroit Lions Jerseys. Instead, Baltimore was on its heels all game against the NFL’s No. 31 offense and couldn’t consistently get into the end zone against the league’s No. 30 defense.

But in the end, the Ravens moved into the No. 5 spot in the AFC heading into Week 17, taking a half-game lead over the Tennessee Titans Jerseys and Buffalo Bills Jerseys.

Ravens top Colts, move within one win of playoff berth

Posted on January 17, 2019January 17, 2019Categories NFLTags , , , , ,

The Baltimore Ravens Jerseys (9-6) outlasted the feisty but overmatched Indianapolis Colts Jerseys (3-12) in a 23-16 win on a rainy Saturday evening in Baltimore. Here’s what we learned:

1. The Ravens avoided disaster (a loss to this Colts team would have been embarrassing at this point in the season) and also came one step closer to completing their remarkable playoff push by winning in a tough environment Saturday. Sure, Baltimore was playing at home, but with light rain becoming steady and winds picking up in the second half, it wasn’t a walk in the park. In outlasting the Colts, cheap nfl jerseys the Ravens grabbed control of their destiny, needing only a win in Week 17 to clinch a postseason berth, no matter what happens elsewhere. They rode their defense for much of the season, and though the offense has picked it up recently and the defense has lost a bit with Jimmy Smith Jerseys Jerseys’s injury, it was again that unit that stood firm in the final two minutes to secure the win.

“We’re rolling right now,” safety Eric Weddle Jerseys told CBS’ Jamie Erdahl after the game. “It’s a great feeling to know we control our own destiny.”

2. This weather was made for Baltimore’s style of play — or its play before December arrived. Baltimore ran Alex Collins 18 times for 51 yards on a wet, sloppy field, but even with an increasingly intense rain, still opted to throw the ball 38 times. Flacco completed 29 of the attempts for 237 yards and two touchdowns, continuing his solid month of play even in adverse conditions. The reliance on the pass almost cost Baltimore, especially on a third-and-10 when, with less than three minutes remaining and Indianapolis having exhausted all of its timeouts, the Ravens chose to pass. It ended in an incompletion intended for Mike Wallace Jerseys Jerseys, who was running a six-yard drag, and gave the Colts both 2:36 to work with and an extra timeout via the two-minute warning. that would have looked incredibly ugly, had Indianapolis capitalized on the ensuing possession.

3. Credit the Colts — a three-win team with a coach on a white-hot seat and very little to play for — for fighting back from a multiple-score deficit to make things incredibly interesting in the final five minutes of this game. What was a mildly intriguing (thanks in part to the weather) game became a very entertaining one. At the end, though, Indianapolis’ deficiencies — shoddy pass protection, receivers not named Hilton who struggle to get open, questionable play calling — ultimately sank the Colts, even as they threatened to tie the game in the final two minutes.

4. We don’t know how much longer Adam Vinatieri Jerseys will kick, but it sure was heart-warming to see a 44-year-old future Hall of Famer drill 3 of 5 field goals and come about five feet shy of clearing the crossbar on a 60-yard attempt. The latter was a testament to Vinatieri’s lasting greatness, even if he didn’t actually make the field goal. We’ll keep an eye on his field goal percentage, though, which fell below 90 for the season after his 38-yard attempt was blocked. A 60 percent day (with the other miss being the 60-yard attempt) didn’t bring him back over 90, but if he can boost it in Week 17 (he’ll need a banner day with plenty of attempts and a perfect success rate), he’ll trigger an escalator in his contract that pays him an additional $500,000. We’re rooting for you and your bank account, Adam.

OC Todd Haley explains what went wrong on final drive vs. Patriots

Posted on January 4, 2019January 4, 2019Categories NFLTags , , , , ,

10:55 AM ETJeremy FowlerESPN Staff Writer CloseESPN staff writer
Previously a college football reporter for CBSSports.com
University of Florida graduateFollow on TwitterFacebookTwitterFacebook MessengerPinterestEmailprintcommentPITTSBURGH — Earlier in the week, Pittsburgh Steelers cheap jerseys quarterback Ben Roethlisberger cheap jerseys and coach Mike Tomlin gave their side of how the Patriots game fell apart on the final drive. Offensive coordinator Todd Haley’s first time to address the media was Thursday, and his side added a new layer: The Steelers were expected to run an “incomplete or out of bounds” play on the second-to-last play. Once Darrius Heyward-Bey cheap jerseys was tackled in bounds with 22 seconds to go, the plan to run a measured final play was foiled.

“You’re counting on having three shots at the end zone,” said Haley, including the overturned Jesse James cheap jerseys touchdown with 28 seconds left.

The Patriots won 27-24 on a Duron Harmon cheap jerseys cheap jerseys interception with 5 seconds to play, but of course the sequence wasn’t so simple. Here’s Haley’s full explanation:

Duron Harmon cheap jerseys cheap jerseys’s interception might not have happened had Darrius Heyward-Bey cheap jerseys gotten out of bounds the play before. Joe Sargent/Getty ImagesOn whether staff would have done anything differently on the final drive: “Yeah, have the first touchdown be a touchdown, No. 1. I know Coach [Tomlin] has talked about this a bunch, but the only thing I’ll say is that’s what we call an incomplete or out-of-bounds situation after the ball was ruled an incompletion. We don’t want the ball in the field of play there without a timeout. I’m never going to question Ben’s decision of thinking Hey-Bey could get out of bounds, but as far as scenarios, we’re in an incomplete or out-of-bounds situation. The clock will not be running if things go the way they’re supposed to go. Then you’re getting the guys on the field for each particular play you wanted on the field and you’re counting on having three shots at the end zone.”

On any regrets about not having Martavis Bryant cheap jerseys in on the final play: “Not the first play. Again, it’s an incomplete or out of bounds. We teach the receivers if they don’t think they can get out of bounds to drop the ball as long as it’s not fourth down. Again, cheap jerseys both guys thought that it would go different and it didn’t. And it’s a great learning situation as far as that goes because we practice that every Friday. We go through the last seven plays incomplete or out of bounds. You can’t catch the ball if you can’t get out of bounds, and we got one caught in-bounds. So, Tay’s standing on the sideline next to me, but as far as the play, I called the best play I thought for the situation. And again, Tay hadn’t practiced where he would’ve been and we didn’t feel comfortable with him being in there. They made us hot, which caused a pressure situation. Ben got on the run and again, I won’t question his decision of thinking Hey-Bey could get out of bounds or in the end zone, but as it went, it didn’t work out that way.”

On the final play that led to an interception: “We just can’t throw an interception. Like I said, Coach has talked about that whole thing ad nauseam. We have a very big game for us — biggest game of the year for us this week. And we’ve got to be on it and go out and play our best game.”

On questions about whether Steelers should have had two plays ready to go in final sequence: “There are a lot of times we have two plays called in the huddle, but, again, that was an incomplete or out-of-bounds situation. You cannot in that situation get caught in the field of play, and again, we call plays accordingly. That would normally be A.B. coming across the field, which will get a lot of attention. We had four guys in the end zone. Like I said though, they made us hot which they hadn’t done all day, and we’ve got to make sure Hey-Bey is either able to get out of bounds or get the ball thrown away.”

On what it was like trying to handle play-calling once Heyward-Bey didn’t get out of bounds: “You can’t change personnel. You can’t do any of that. You’ve got to get up and do what we did. Make the decision of clocking it or fake clocking it and basically handling it how we did. We’ve just got to do it better.”

Steelers release longtime linebacker James Harrison

Posted on December 22, 2018December 22, 2018Categories NFLTags , , , ,

James Harrison Jerseys has terrorized the AFC North for the better part of the last decade at linebacker for the Pittsburgh Steelers Jerseys. Now his time in black and yellow is over — again.

The Steelers (11-3) released Harrison, 39, on Saturday after a season in which his playing time severely diminished while the wins kept piling up. The move corresponds with Pittsburgh activating offensive tackle Marcus Gilbert Jerseys from the Reserve/Suspended by Commissioner List following a four-game suspension for violating the league’s performance-enhancing substance policy.

We have activated OT Marcus Gilbert Jerseys from the Reserve/Suspended by Commissioner List to our active roster, and cheap jerseys released LB James Harrison Jerseys.

— Pittsburgh Steelers Jerseys December 23, 2017

A 15-year veteran, Harrison suited up for just five games this season and has only three combined tackles and one sack to show for it. This is the first time since 2002 that Harrison has appeared in less than 10 games.

The #Steelers cutting James Harrison Jerseys makes sense. Probably the least-likely player to get claimed off waivers. Could return on Monday night

— Ian Rapoport December 23, 2017

From 2004-12, Harrison was one of the most feared defenders in Pittsburgh before the Steelers released him in 2013 after a contract dispute. Harrison then spent one year with the Cincinnati Bengals Jerseys before returning to Pittsburgh midway through the 2014 season following a brief retirement.

A two-time Super Bowl champion, Harrison has racked up 82.5 sacks on 788 total tackles while being named to the Pro Bowl every season from 2007-11. He was named NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 2008.
